People have been asking about our route and so I have updated the map with our plan for the first 6 months or so. But you know what they say about plans…
I am leery to post too much specific info about our route online or our current location at any given time, but I understand the interest. For years I raced in bikepacking events and carried a SPOT unit that sent very specific location-based points every 10 minutes to a public website. There were two occasions when I pulled into a store and the proprietor greeted me by name because he had been tracking me on the site. This was encouraging, but also strangely disturbing. There were many stories of racers coming across people in the middle of the night out on a trail in the backcountry cheering them on or asking if they needed food or shelter. These races were always about the ‘Do. It. Yourself’ ethos and so hand-outs were strictly against that mentality. While the ‘spectators’ had good intentions they didn’t always understand why racers would turn them down and occasionally took it personally and there was bad blood in some cases.
Anyway, I am not trying to discourage anyone from dropping in for any reason or reaching out to visit. In fact, we would love to see friends and family wherever we can, that is a big reason for all this travel. I am just explaining my thoughts concerning sharing our whereabouts on the world wide interweb.
